What Is Google Antigravity?

Antigravity is Google's agent platform of a desktop IDE and a terminal CLI (agy) โ€“ since 18 June 2026 the successor to the Gemini CLI for individual users.

One engine, two interfaces

Google Antigravity has two parts sharing the same "Shared Agent Engine": Antigravity 2.0 is a full desktop IDE with a visual multi-panel interface, Antigravity CLI (the agy command) is a lightweight terminal program for SSH and keyboard-first work. Settings and permissions sync between both, and conversations can move back and forth between CLI and IDE.

Successor to the Gemini CLI

On 19 May 2026, Google announced it would retire the Gemini CLI for individual, free-tier users. Since the cutoff date of 18 June 2026, free Google-account access no longer runs through the Gemini CLI but through Antigravity โ€“ enterprise customers and paying API users are exempt from the change.

Plan tiers and G1 credits

Antigravity has three tiers: a free baseline tier with a weekly-refreshed quota, Google AI Pro with a more generous quota refreshed every five hours, and Google AI Ultra with the highest quota. G1 credits are a separate balance that automatically kicks in once your plan quota runs out (can be switched on or off in settings).

Even Claude on Ultra

All tiers run Google's own Gemini models. Only the Ultra tier adds third-party models on top โ€“ including Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus, plus an open GPT-OSS model.

EXAMPLE

Ask a colleague with a Google AI Ultra subscription whether they can switch between Gemini and Claude models in Antigravity โ€“ the model-selection dropdown shows exactly which models are unlocked on their plan tier.

QUICK QUIZ

Since when has Antigravity been the official successor to the Gemini CLI for individual Google users?
